Iranian Boxer Reserves his Place in 2012 Olympics
Ehsan Rouzbahani, the Iranian boxer, secured a berth for the 2012 London Olympics at the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships. He overpowered Joseph Ward from the Republic of Ireland at the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Exhibition Complex in the Azerbaijani capital Baku. During the opening round of the match, the fighters leveled 4-4, but a penalty for Ward in the second round tipped the balance in favor of Rouzbahani, making him open up a four-point lead at 12-8. The final round between the two light heavyweight boxers ended in a 15-15 tie, but Rouzbahani won the match on a count-back. The victory made Rouzbahani advance to the quarterfinals, where he will take on Elshod Rasulov. The 81-kilogram boxer was defeated by Rasulov in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, and will be seeking revenge against the Uzbek. So far no Iranian boxer has won a medal in the World Championships. It is estimated that around 685 boxers from 127 countries will participate in the prestigious competition.
